Pedestrian Killed in Fatal Collision with 18-Wheeler on Dallas Freeway

A pedestrian was struck and killed by a semi-truck Thursday night on South R.L. Thornton Freeway in Dallas, marking another tragic incident in what has become a concerning pattern of pedestrian fatalities in the area.

The collision occurred around 9:30 p.m. near East Laureland Road, forcing authorities to close all northbound lanes for approximately three hours while investigators worked the scene. Emergency responders pronounced the pedestrian dead upon arrival.

Investigation Ongoing

Why was someone walking on a major highway after dark? That’s the question investigators are still trying to answer. Officials have not yet determined what circumstances led the pedestrian to be on the freeway at the time of the collision.

The victim’s identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin by the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office, a standard procedure in such cases. Traffic flow has since returned to normal after lanes reopened early Friday morning.

This incident isn’t isolated. Dallas has seen several serious pedestrian accidents involving large vehicles in recent months. Just weeks ago, two pedestrians were killed when a crash sent a Mercedes onto a sidewalk on Frankford Road in Far North Dallas on a Thursday evening shortly before 6 p.m., according to legal reports published by local attorneys.

Commercial Vehicle Safety Concerns

Commercial vehicle accidents involving pedestrians can be particularly devastating due to the size disparity, often resulting in fatalities or life-altering injuries. In a recent case highlighting the severity of such collisions, a 78-year-old Dallas County woman received a $5.2 million settlement after being severely injured by a commercial garbage truck in a grocery store parking lot.

“This never should have happened,” attorney Weinstein stated regarding that case. “They knew the camera didn’t work and ignored their own safety rules. The driver said he couldn’t see, and they still sent him out there. That kind of disregard destroys lives.”

While details of Thursday’s fatal 18-wheeler collision are still emerging, the incident underscores ongoing safety concerns at the intersection of commercial traffic and pedestrian movement throughout Dallas County.

Authorities urge pedestrians to use designated crosswalks and overpasses when available, and remind drivers—especially those operating commercial vehicles—to maintain vigilance, particularly during nighttime hours when visibility is reduced.

For the family of Thursday night’s victim, such safety reminders come too late. As investigators piece together the circumstances of this latest tragedy, the community is left to reflect on the fragility of life on Dallas roadways.
