Powerball Jackpot Hits $1.6 Billion: Third-Largest Prize in U.S. History

Must read

The Powerball jackpot has soared to a staggering $1.6 billion after no tickets matched all six numbers in Saturday night’s drawing, making it the third-largest lottery prize in U.S. history.

Saturday’s numbers were 9, 14, 17, 18, 53, and a Powerball of 6 with Power Play 3X. While the grand prize remained elusive, several players across the country still walked away with substantial winnings, including five tickets that matched five white balls for $1 million prizes in California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, and Michigan.

Record-Breaking Territory

The current jackpot has been growing since July 19, with Monday’s drawing marking the 46th in this jackpot run. It now trails only two previous lottery records: the $2.04 billion Powerball prize won in California in 2022 and the $1.602 billion Mega Millions jackpot claimed in Florida in 2023, according to lottery officials.

“The excitement is definitely building with each drawing,” said Drew Svitko, Powerball Product Group Chair and Pennsylvania Lottery Executive Director. “We’re seeing increased ticket sales and growing interest as players dream about what they might do with a billion-dollar windfall.”

Should someone win Monday’s jackpot, they’ll face an immediate choice: take the full $1.6 billion paid in 30 graduated payments over 29 years, or opt for the lump sum cash option of approximately $735.3 million — both subject to federal and potentially state taxes.

Against Astronomical Odds

What are your chances of claiming this life-changing sum? The odds of matching all five white balls plus the Powerball remain a daunting 1 in 292.2 million — significantly worse than the approximately 1 in 11.5 million chance of being struck by lightning during your lifetime.

Despite these long odds, Americans spent nearly $108.9 billion on lottery tickets in fiscal year 2022, according to the North American Association of State and Provincial Lotteries. That’s an average of about $430 per adult.

The current jackpot’s growth has been fueled by a string of 45 consecutive drawings without a grand prize winner. The last Powerball jackpot was won on July 19 in California, when a single ticket claimed a $1.08 billion prize.

Economic Impact

These massive jackpots generate more than just dreams for players — they create significant revenue for the 45 states plus Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands that participate in Powerball.

Lottery proceeds are often earmarked for education, senior services, and other public programs, with specific allocations varying by state. In fiscal year 2022, U.S. lotteries transferred $29.3 billion to their beneficiaries.

“While the odds are long, the impact of lottery revenue is tangible and significant for communities across America,” explained David Gale, Executive Director of the North American Association of State and Provincial Lotteries. “Even as players chase these record jackpots, the real winners are often public education and services.”

Monday’s drawing will take place at 10:59 p.m. ET at the Florida Lottery studio in Tallahassee. Ticket sales cut-off times vary by jurisdiction but typically occur 1-2 hours before the drawing.

For any potential winner, financial advisors universally recommend securing the ticket, remaining anonymous where legally permitted, and assembling a team of legal and financial professionals before claiming the prize.

Meanwhile, millions of Americans will continue their twice-weekly ritual of purchasing tickets and dreaming of what could be — all for the price of a $2 chance at financial transformation against nearly impossible odds.
