Rhode Island Hockey Game Shooting: 3 Dead in Pawtucket Family Dispute

Must read

Three people are dead and three others critically injured after gunfire erupted at a high school hockey game in Rhode Island on Friday, sending players and spectators scrambling for cover in what authorities describe as a family dispute turned deadly.

The shooting unfolded around 2:30 p.m. at Dennis M. Lynch Arena in Pawtucket, about 45 miles south of Boston, where a livestreamed hockey match was underway. Pawtucket Police Chief Tina Goncalves identified the suspect as Robert Dorgan, also known as Roberta Esposito, born in 1969, who died from what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

“We’re putting all the pieces together. It appears [the suspect is dead] from a self-inflicted gun wound,” Goncalves stated during a press briefing following the incident.

Authorities have determined the shooting stemmed from a family dispute involving a relative who was playing in the game. No players were harmed in the incident, but the violence left two victims dead and three others fighting for their lives with critical injuries.

Heroic Intervention

What might have prevented an even greater tragedy? According to officials, a brave bystander stepped in during the chaos. “A Good Samaritan stepped in and interjected in this scene, and that’s probably what led to a swift end of this tragic event,” Chief Goncalves noted.

The shooting’s horrific moments were captured on video through the game’s livestream, which recorded the sound of gunfire and the ensuing panic as players and spectators scrambled to safety. Investigators are now using this footage as they piece together the timeline of events.

Police have interviewed approximately 100 witnesses who were present at the arena. The sheer number of people in attendance has complicated the investigation, though authorities maintain the shooting was targeted rather than random.

Local Response

Local officials responded rapidly to the scene, with Rhode Island Representative Sherry Cruz mentioned in the immediate response following the first 911 call, as documented in emergency communications.

The community of Pawtucket, a city of roughly 75,000 residents, now finds itself grappling with the aftermath of a tragedy that unfolded in a place typically associated with youthful competition and family entertainment.

Moments after the shots rang out, emergency responders flooded the area surrounding the Dennis M. Lynch Arena on Andrew D. Ferland Way, where the violence had transformed an ordinary Friday afternoon into a scene of terror.

As investigators continue their work, questions remain about how a family dispute escalated to such deadly proportions, and whether additional security measures at sporting venues might prevent similar tragedies in the future. For now, a community mourns as families of the injured pray for recovery.
