Salado Earns Coveted Tourism Friendly Texas Certification, Boosting Economic Development Hopes
The Village of Salado has joined an elite group of Texas communities recognized for their tourism potential, receiving the Tourism Friendly Texas Certified Community designation from Travel Texas after completing a rigorous multi-step certification process, Governor Greg Abbott announced this week.
The certification program, which allows only one entity to apply per area, aims to help communities across the state develop tourism as a viable economic strategy. It’s part of a broader push to diversify local economies while preserving and promoting the unique cultural assets that make Texas communities distinctive, according to the state’s tourism guidelines.
“Tourism is critical to both our local and state economies. Travelers to and within Texas generate almost $200 billion in annual economic impact and support 1.3 million jobs across the state,” Governor Abbott has stated when recognizing similar achievements in other communities.
Small Town, Big Ambitions
Nestled in Central Texas with its municipal offices located at 301 N. Stagecoach Road, the Village of Salado isn’t resting on its laurels. Beyond its new tourism certification, the community is also working toward becoming a Certified Film Friendly Community through the Texas Film Commission, which would provide additional resources for media productions interested in the area.
What makes this certification particularly significant? For small municipalities like Salado, tourism represents not just visitor dollars but potential population growth, business development, and cultural preservation opportunities.
The village joins a growing list of Texas communities embracing tourism as an economic driver. Laredo was recently recognized by Governor Abbott for similar efforts in expanding its economy through tourism while promoting local heritage.
Economic Impact Beyond Borders
While the certification itself doesn’t come with direct financial grants, it positions communities like Salado to better compete for tourism dollars in a state where the industry generates nearly $200 billion annually. The village, which operates its municipal services Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM according to its budget documents, now stands to benefit from increased visibility through state tourism channels.
But the road to tourism success isn’t automatic. Communities must leverage their certification with strategic investments in infrastructure, marketing, and visitor experiences—all while balancing the needs of residents with the desires of tourists.
The certification comes at a time when domestic tourism continues to recover from pandemic-era disruptions, with many travelers seeking authentic experiences in smaller communities rather than exclusively visiting major urban destinations.
As Salado embraces its new tourism-friendly designation, the village joins a statewide economic engine that supports over a million jobs across Texas—proving that even in the nation’s second-largest state, small communities can make a significant economic impact when they showcase what makes them uniquely Texan.
