Savannah Guthrie’s Mother Missing: FBI Joins Search in Tucson Disappearance

Must read

The mother of “Today” show co-host Savannah Guthrie has been missing for more than two weeks, with authorities now suggesting someone in the local community may know who’s responsible for her disappearance.

Nancy Guthrie, 84, vanished from her Tucson-area home in the Catalina Foothills on January 31, 2026. She was reported missing the following day after she failed to show up for church services. Investigators believe she was taken against her will, triggering a massive search operation that has now entered its third week.

Investigation Intensifies

What began as a missing persons case quickly evolved into something more alarming. The FBI has taken a central role in the investigation, recently increasing the reward for information to $100,000.

On February 13, a significant breakthrough appeared possible when a Pima County SWAT team and FBI agents executed a search warrant at a residence approximately two miles from Guthrie’s home. “The source says after receiving a tip, authorities detained two males, plus one of their moms. The source said a warrant had been served,” according to reports. Despite the dramatic operation, no arrests have been confirmed, and officials haven’t publicly identified any suspects.

Doorbell camera footage has provided investigators with a description of a potential suspect. The FBI characterizes the individual as a male standing between 5’9″ and 5’10” with an average build, wearing a mask and gloves at the time of the incident. Perhaps most distinctively, he carried a 25-liter “Ozark Trail Hiker Pack” backpack, a detail investigators hope might trigger recognition.

Local Connection?

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos believes someone in the Tucson community knows the perpetrator. When asked directly about this possibility in a recent interview, Nanos was unequivocal: “Do you believe someone out here in the Tucson area knows who that person is? I do believe that. I do,” he stated.

The case has drawn national attention, not only because of the connection to NBC’s Savannah Guthrie but also due to the troubling circumstances. An elderly woman seemingly taken from her home in an established neighborhood has rattled the typically peaceful Catalina Foothills community.

Neighbors have been cooperating with authorities, reviewing their own security footage and reporting any unusual activity from the night of January 31. The FBI’s substantial reward increase suggests investigators are pushing hard for new leads.

Could someone be harboring crucial information? That’s the implication behind Sheriff Nanos’ comments, which appear designed to pressure potential witnesses or those with knowledge of the suspect to come forward.

As the search for Nancy Guthrie continues, her family faces an agonizing wait. Meanwhile, investigators comb through evidence from the recent search operation, hoping it might finally provide the breakthrough needed to bring the 84-year-old grandmother home.
