Six people, including a 7-year-old child, were killed in a series of related shootings in rural Mississippi Friday night in what authorities are describing as a case of family violence that has left the small community reeling.
The shootings occurred at three separate locations in and around Cedarbluff, a small community west of West Point in northeast Mississippi. The suspect, identified as 24-year-old Daricka M. Moore, is now in custody and faces at least one first-degree murder charge that could be upgraded to capital murder.
According to Clay County Sheriff Eddie Scott, four of the victims were members of Moore’s own family, including a 7-year-old second cousin. Two other adults were also killed in the rampage. Investigators have revealed that Moore allegedly placed a gun to the head of another young child at the same home where the 7-year-old was killed, though it remains unclear whether the gun misfired.
A Community in Shock
“A situation like this, you’ve got a family member attacking their own family,” Sheriff Scott said. “Whatever the reason is, we’re hoping that we’ll find out.” The sheriff’s office has stated that “multiple innocent lives” were lost “due to violence” in the incident.
What could drive someone to such violence against their own relatives? Authorities have not yet released a motive for the shootings, and the victims’ identities remain undisclosed as the investigation continues.
Sheriff Scott expressed particular dismay at the killing of the young child. “I don’t know what kind of motive you could have to kill a 7-year-old,” he said, highlighting the incomprehensible nature of the attack.
The tragedy has sent shockwaves through Cedarbluff, a tight-knit rural community where violent crime of this magnitude is rare. A third young child and their mother were also present in the house during one of the shootings but were not harmed.
Moore is scheduled for an initial court appearance on Monday. The sheriff’s office has assured residents there is no ongoing threat to the community, as the suspect remains in custody.
For now, investigators continue piecing together what happened on that violent Friday night, trying to make sense of a senseless tragedy that has forever altered multiple families in this small Mississippi community.
