Sydney Hanukkah Mass Shooting: 15 Dead in Targeted Attack on Jewish Community

Must read

A mass shooting at a Hanukkah festival in Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach has left 15 people dead and dozens more injured in what authorities are calling a terrorist attack specifically targeting the Australian Jewish community.

The violence erupted December 14, 2025, during a celebration hosted by the Chabad organization to mark the first night of Hanukkah. Among the 16 total fatalities was a child and one of the attackers, with at least 40 others suffering injuries in one of Australia’s deadliest incidents of mass violence in recent history, according to records of the tragedy.

A Community Targeted

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese didn’t mince words about the nature of the attack. “This was a deliberate targeting of Jewish Australians celebrating the beginning of Hanukkah,” he said in an address to the nation hours after the shooting. The attack has sent shockwaves through Jewish communities worldwide, many already on heightened alert.

For those with connections to the victims, the tragedy hits unbearably close to home. “Our hearts go out,” said Rabbi Dubrawsky, who lost a family member in the attack. “The young man whose life was snuffed away, his mom, is my cousin. So it’s very personal,” he stated during a memorial service.

How do communities continue religious celebrations in the face of such targeted violence? “We don’t rely on miracles,” one community leader explained. “There are people who hate it. But we want the world to see the light.”

Growing Security Concerns

The Bondi Beach attack represents a terrifying escalation in what many Jewish leaders describe as a global rise in antisemitism. Jewish communities around the world have been strengthening security measures at synagogues and community centers, a sad necessity that’s become increasingly common.

“It’s something we’re dealing with on a daily basis. You’re going to be walking past security officers. Gates have been built at more than one synagogue here in Dallas in the last two years,” said Joel Schwitzer, regional director of the American Jewish Committee, in a statement published by The Jerusalem Post.

Security experts note that holiday celebrations present particular challenges, as they often involve outdoor gatherings and larger-than-usual attendance. The Bondi Beach celebration was meant to be a joyous public display of Jewish tradition — the lighting of the menorah symbolizing hope and resilience.

Yet even as communities mourn, many Jewish leaders have emphasized that they won’t be intimidated into hiding their faith or traditions. Despite the horror of what happened in Sydney, Hanukkah celebrations continued around the world, many with enhanced security and a defiant spirit of solidarity.

Australian authorities have promised a thorough investigation into the attack, including examining how the perpetrators obtained weapons in a country known for its strict gun control laws. Meanwhile, a global outpouring of support for Australia’s Jewish community continues as the names and stories of the victims begin to emerge.
