Texas DPS Launches Tactical Flight Training Over Collin County Skies

Must read

Texas aviation officials are preparing to take to the skies above Collin County next week for specialized training exercises.

The Texas Department of Public Safety’s Aircraft Operations Division will conduct Tactical Flight Officer training in Allen and McKinney from Tuesday, January 13 through Thursday, January 15. The multi-day exercises will utilize DPS aircraft based at McKinney airport as officers sharpen critical skills for aerial public safety operations, officials confirmed.

“These exercises are planned, controlled and not related to any active incident,” DPS emphasized in a statement about the upcoming training. “Training in real-world environments helps agencies strengthen coordination, improve response times and ensure officers are prepared to protect the public safely and effectively.”

Specialized Aviation Training

Residents in Allen and McKinney might notice increased air activity during the three-day period, though officials have stressed the operations are routine training rather than responses to emergencies. The exercises represent part of DPS’s ongoing commitment to maintaining highly-trained flight personnel.

The department’s Aircraft Operations Division maintains stringent standards for its aviation team. All pilots must hold at minimum a commercial pilot license with instrument ratings and undergo regular recurrent training to maintain their qualifications.

Why Collin County? The area offers varied terrain and urban environments that provide realistic training scenarios for tactical flight operations. Such exercises typically combine ground coordination with aerial surveillance techniques critical for law enforcement operations.

Part of Broader Training Calendar

The January tactical flight training doesn’t appear on broader DPS recruit school schedules, which typically span several months. For instance, the department’s A-2026 recruit class begins February 1, 2026, with graduation set for August 28, according to the agency’s training schedule.

This specialized flight officer training represents a more focused exercise for existing personnel rather than part of basic recruit training. The Collin County Sheriff’s Office, which maintains its own training calendar, hasn’t specifically listed this DPS exercise among its hosted events.

Similar tactical flight officer certification courses occur elsewhere in the country. A comparable hybrid course is scheduled for Flagler County, Florida in February 2025, according to public safety aviation resources.

For residents wondering about increased aircraft activity next week, officials have made it clear: it’s just practice. The controlled exercises allow flight crews to maintain their edge without the pressure of actual emergencies—ensuring they’re ready when those real calls come in.
