A homeowner in Texarkana, Texas fatally shot a burglary suspect who was attempting to break into a vehicle in the early morning hours of New Year’s Eve, authorities said.
The deadly confrontation occurred around 4:20 a.m. on December 31, 2025, when the homeowner discovered two individuals allegedly trying to break into a vehicle parked on North Park Road. “During the encounter, one of the suspects was shot and later died at the hospital,” local police confirmed.
What happened to the second suspect? That remains unclear as authorities haven’t released information about whether the accomplice was apprehended or fled the scene. The identities of both the deceased suspect and the homeowner have not yet been disclosed pending further investigation.
Texas has long maintained robust self-defense laws that generally permit homeowners to use deadly force when protecting their property, particularly during nighttime theft attempts. The state’s Castle Doctrine gives residents substantial legal protection when defending against intruders.
The pre-dawn incident comes amid ongoing debates about property rights, self-defense, and the appropriate use of force during non-violent crimes. Still, Texas juries have historically sided with homeowners in similar cases where vehicles or other property were being targeted by suspected thieves.
Local residents expressed mixed reactions to the shooting. “It’s terrible someone lost their life, but what are you supposed to do when people are breaking into your stuff at four in the morning?” said one neighbor who declined to be named.
Authorities have not yet determined whether charges will be filed against the homeowner, though such prosecutions are relatively rare in Texas when property owners respond to criminal activity on their premises, legal experts noted.
The investigation continues as police work to piece together the events that led to the fatal confrontation on what should have been the final day of the year.
