Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has set his sights on fashion giant Shein, launching an investigation into the online retailer over allegations of unethical labor practices and unsafe products. The probe could spell trouble for one of the world’s fastest-growing clothing brands, which has already faced scrutiny over its supply chain practices.
The investigation will examine whether Shein has violated Texas law through its manufacturing practices, particularly regarding the use of toxic materials and potentially misleading marketing about product safety and ethical sourcing, according to a statement released by Paxton’s office. The company’s data collection and privacy practices will also fall under the microscope.
“Any company that cuts corners on labor standards or product safety, especially those operating in foreign nations like China, will be held accountable,” Paxton stated. “Texans deserve to know that the companies they buy from are ethical, safe, transparent, and not exploiting workers or selling harmful products.”
Fast Fashion Under Fire
Shein has transformed the retail landscape with its ultra-fast fashion model, generating more than $30 billion in global revenue in 2023. The company operates primarily online, offering thousands of new styles daily at rock-bottom prices that have made it particularly popular among young consumers.
