A teenage football player from Ponder, Texas remains in critical condition after a sledding accident turned tragic during Monday’s winter weather. Caden Nowicki, a 17-year-old Ponder High School senior, suffered severe injuries when he was thrown from an improvised sled and collided with a fence.
The accident occurred around 2:30 p.m. in the 400 block of Amyz Hill Road in Denton County, where an ATV was towing a kayak being used as a makeshift sled. When the vehicle left the roadway, Nowicki was ejected and struck a fence, according to authorities who responded to the scene.
Nowicki was immediately transported to Medical City Denton, where he remains in the intensive care unit. His current condition has prompted an outpouring of support from the small community northwest of Dallas.
“Caden is an outstanding young man who is loved by many,” Ponder ISD Superintendent James Hill said in a letter to parents. The school district has rallied around the injured student and his family, with Hill adding, “We ask that you keep Caden, his family, and friends in your fervent prayers and respect their need for privacy during this very difficult time.”
