Texas Traffic Stop Uncovers Fraud Ring After Wild High-Speed Chase

Must read

A New Year’s Eve traffic stop in East Texas turned into a dramatic high-speed chase, complete with a flipped SUV and a desperate escape attempt through a shattered windshield — ending with the arrest of a New York man allegedly involved in a large-scale fraud operation.

Michael Foluso Thomas, 32, faces multiple charges after leading Nacogdoches County Sheriff’s deputies on a wild pursuit along State Highway 59 on December 31. What began as a routine traffic violation quickly escalated when Thomas, who initially pulled over, suddenly sped away from deputies, as documented by local authorities.

The chase came to an abrupt halt when Thomas lost control of his SUV, sending the vehicle flipping across the highway. But that wasn’t the end of his escape attempt.

In a moment captured on police dashcam, Thomas kicked out the windshield of his overturned vehicle and crawled through the jagged opening, sustaining a severe laceration to his arm in the process. Despite his injury, he attempted to flee on foot before deputies apprehended him.

Evidence of Fraud Ring Discovered

What might have been a simple traffic violation and evasion case took a more serious turn when deputies searched Thomas’s vehicle. Inside, they discovered evidence pointing to what authorities describe as a large-scale fraud operation, including numerous fake identification cards, counterfeit credit cards, and merchandise allegedly purchased using fraudulent payment methods.

“A New York man led deputies on a wild NYE chase—then kicked out his windshield to make a run for it,” reported CBS News, summarizing the unusual holiday incident that has now resulted in multiple felony charges.

After receiving treatment at the scene for his injuries, Thomas was transported to a local hospital before being booked into custody. His bonds total a staggering $305,000 across multiple charges including resisting arrest, evading arrest, and two counts of fraud.

How did a traffic stop on a rural Texas highway lead to uncovering what appears to be an interstate fraud operation? That’s a question investigators are likely still piecing together as they examine the evidence collected from Thomas’s vehicle.

The dramatic windshield escape attempt — coming just hours before the New Year — capped off 2023 with one of the more unusual pursuits Nacogdoches County deputies have handled, though thankfully one that ended without serious injury to officers or bystanders.
