Texas Veterans Land Sale: Exclusive Low-Down-Payment Land Buying Opportunity

Must read

Texas has opened its latest Veterans-Only Land Sale, offering eligible service members the chance to purchase parcels at competitive rates with minimal down payments — a benefit that officials say remains unique nationwide.

Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham announced the opening of bids for four tracts totaling over 23.6 acres, with bidding set to close on January 15, 2026. The Veterans Land Board (VLB) program allows qualifying veterans to finance their purchases with just 5% down and a 30-year fixed rate of 7.25%, with loan maximums of $150,000 for individual veterans or $225,000 for eligible spouses, according to program guidelines.

A Uniquely Texan Benefit

“As VLB Chairwoman, serving our Veterans is my top priority and I am honored to ensure our Veterans are always supported in return for their diligent military service,” Buckingham said in a recent statement.

The land sale program, which operates quarterly in January, April, July, and October, represents just one facet of Texas’s comprehensive veterans benefits package, widely considered the most robust in the nation. Veterans can participate in the bidding process for multiple tracts simultaneously, though the VLB will only finance up to the minimum bid amount. Any amount over the minimum must be paid at closing, officials noted.

What happens when veterans can’t keep up with payments? “Sometimes veterans can’t make the payments on their VLB loans and must forfeit their land. The Texas Veterans Land Board then makes these tracts of land available for other Texas veterans to bid on every April and October,” according to Dallas County Veterans Services information. Any forfeited lands that remain unsold eventually become available to the general public.

Beyond Land: A Comprehensive Approach

The land program represents just one component of the state’s veterans benefits system. The Texas General Land Office, through the VLB, also provides home loans, long-term care facilities, and manages veterans cemeteries in Abilene, Corpus Christi, Killeen, and Mission. A new cemetery is scheduled to open in Lubbock in December 2025, the agency has announced.

“The VLB Veterans Land Loan Program is the only one of its kind in the nation,” according to program materials. The initiative is self-sustaining, with bonds funding the program retired through loan repayments while administrative costs are covered by small fees on each transaction.

For veterans seeking assistance navigating these benefits, the Texas Veterans Call Center operates weekdays to provide support and guidance on available programs.

A Historic Administration

The current land sale operates under the leadership of Dr. Dawn Buckingham, who made history in 2022 as Texas’s first female Land Commissioner. Beyond veterans affairs, her office handles disaster relief, education funding, energy policy, and border security initiatives.

The Land Commissioner’s office and VLB have maintained a strong presence at public events like the State Fair of Texas, where they showcase available resources for veterans seeking land purchases, home financing, or long-term care options.

“Since 1836, the General Land Office has offered benefits to Texas Veterans,” the agency notes — a tradition that continues to evolve nearly two centuries later as the state works to serve those who’ve served the nation.
