Trump Assassination Attempt: Ryan Routh Sentenced to Life in Prison

Must read

Ryan Routh, the man who plotted to assassinate Donald Trump at his Florida golf club in 2024, has been sentenced to life in prison for the failed attempt on the former president’s life.

U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon handed down the sentence on February 4, 2026, in Fort Pierce, Florida, concluding a case that began when a vigilant Secret Service agent spotted Routh lurking with a semi-automatic rifle near Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach nearly 18 months earlier. The agent fired at Routh, preventing him from taking any shots at the then-presidential candidate, according to reports.

Five Felony Convictions

Routh, 60, was convicted in September 2025 by a Florida jury on five serious charges, including attempted assassination of a major presidential candidate, assaulting a federal officer, and multiple counts of unlawful firearm possession. Prosecutors had pushed for the maximum penalty, citing what they described as Routh’s complete lack of remorse following his capture. “He took steps over the course of months to assassinate a major Presidential candidate, demonstrated the will to kill anybody in the way, and has since expressed neither regret nor remorse to his victims,” prosecutors stated in court documents.

What drove a man in his late fifties to attempt such a desperate act? That question loomed over the proceedings as Routh’s defense team requested a 27-year sentence instead of life, pointing to their client’s age, mental health struggles, and his decision to represent himself during portions of the trial as mitigating factors. The request was ultimately denied by Judge Cannon.

The dramatic incident unfolded in September 2024 when Routh positioned himself in the tree line at Trump’s golf club. After being spotted, he fled the scene but was quickly apprehended by law enforcement. Authorities confirmed that the Secret Service’s quick response likely prevented what could have been a successful assassination attempt.

Deliberate Planning

Court documents revealed the methodical nature of Routh’s plan. “Routh’s actions clearly justify a life sentence—he took deliberate measures over several months to take the life of a significant Presidential candidate, showed a readiness to harm anyone who obstructed him, and has expressed neither regret nor remorse to his victims,” prosecutors argued during sentencing.

The case marks the second serious attempt on Trump’s life during the contentious 2024 campaign season, following a July 2024 incident at a Pennsylvania rally where Trump was injured by a bullet that grazed his ear. That shooter was killed by Secret Service agents at the scene.

As Routh begins his life sentence, the incident serves as a sobering reminder of the security challenges facing political figures in an increasingly polarized America — and the severe consequences awaiting those who cross the line from political opposition to violent action.
