Trump Defends Kristi Noem Amid Calls for Resignation Over Minneapolis Shooting

Must read

President Trump has come to the defense of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, affirming she’s doing a “very good job” and will remain in her position despite mounting pressure following the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti by federal agents in Minneapolis.

When asked if Noem would step down amid the fallout, Trump’s response was unequivocal: “No.” The president described an ongoing “big investigation” into Pretti’s killing, which has sparked outrage and calls for accountability from officials across the political spectrum.

“I want to see the investigation. I’m going to be watching over it, and I want a very honorable and honest investigation. I have to see it myself,” Trump stated, adding, “I love everybody. I love all of our people. I love his family. And it’s a very sad situation.”

Calls for Resignation Mount

The controversy has intensified as New York Governor Kathy Hochul publicly demanded Noem’s removal. “I’m calling on her to resign as Secretary of Homeland Security or Donald Trump to do the right thing and just fire her. And, if not, she must be removed or impeached,” Hochul declared in comments that highlight the growing political divide over the incident.

Is Noem’s position truly secure? Despite the public pressure, the White House has reaffirmed that “Secretary Gnome still has the utmost confidence and trust of the president of the United States,” and that she continues to oversee the Department of Homeland Security and immigration enforcement operations, according to a White House statement.

The administration’s strategy appears to be evolving, however. Trump and Noem held a two-hour Oval Office meeting Monday evening, reportedly at Noem’s request, to discuss the situation. Following that meeting, the administration announced that Tom Homan would be sent to Minneapolis as the main point of contact for immigration operations – a move some observers interpret as a partial sidelining of Noem.

Local Opposition to Federal Operations

Meanwhile, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey has taken a firm stance against the federal operation that led to Pretti’s death. In communications with President Trump, Frey “expressed how much Minneapolis has benefited from our immigrant communities and was clear that my main ask is that Operation Metro Surge needs to end.”

The operation, part of the administration’s broader immigration enforcement strategy, has faced significant pushback from local officials and community members who argue it has created fear and distrust among immigrant populations.

For now, Trump appears to be walking a fine line – expressing sympathy for Pretti’s family while standing by his Homeland Security Secretary. But as investigations proceed and political pressure mounts, the administration may yet be forced to reconsider its position on both Noem’s leadership and the controversial operation that has brought national attention to Minneapolis once again.
