Trump Secures $70B in US-South Korea Deals, Boosting American Jobs

Must read

President Trump has secured a staggering array of economic deals during his state visit to South Korea, with agreements worth more than $70 billion that could support hundreds of thousands of American jobs across multiple industries.

The centerpiece of the diplomatic mission is a massive $36.2 billion aircraft purchase agreement with Korean Air, which will acquire 103 Boeing aircraft in a deal the administration says will support up to 135,000 jobs across the United States. The same airline also committed to a separate $13.7 billion purchase of GE Aerospace engines, according to a White House statement detailing the agreements.

Defense and Technology Partnerships

“We’re wedded, and we have a very special relationship, a special bond,” Trump declared during the visit, emphasizing the deep ties between the two nations. The sentiment was backed by concrete action, with the South Korean Air Force selecting L3Harris Technologies for a $2.3 billion deal to develop new Airborne Warning and Control aircraft, supporting over 6,000 American jobs.

Beyond aviation, the agreements span critical infrastructure and emerging technologies. LS Group, a South Korean conglomerate, has pledged to invest $3 billion by 2030 in U.S. power-grid infrastructure. Its subsidiary, LS Greenlink, is already constructing a $681 million manufacturing facility in Virginia, the White House confirmed.

The maritime sector received particular attention during the talks. HD Hyundai and Cerberus Capital Management announced plans for a $5 billion investment program to modernize American shipyards and strengthen supply chains. In a parallel move, Hanwha Ocean unveiled its own $5 billion infrastructure plan aimed at dramatically expanding the Philadelphia Shipyard’s production capacity by “more than ten-fold,” according to the administration’s documents.

Samsung Heavy Industries will also collaborate with Vigor Marine Group on naval vessel maintenance and construction of U.S.-flagged vessels, further cementing the maritime partnership between the nations.

Energy and Critical Resources

Why the sudden surge in South Korean investment? The agreements come as both nations face increasing pressure to secure energy resources and critical supply chains in an uncertain global environment.

The Korea Gas Corporation has signed agreements to purchase approximately 3.3 million tons of U.S. liquefied natural gas annually through long-term deals with sellers including Trafigura and TotalEnergy, advancing what the administration calls “U.S. energy dominance.” In the uranium sector, Centrus Energy Corp has partnered with KHNP and POSCO International to expand uranium enrichment capacity in Piketon, Ohio, in a deal expected to create 3,000 American jobs, the fact sheet notes.

Both countries have also committed to stabilizing and diversifying critical mineral supply chains through public-private collaboration. ReElement Technologies and POSCO International will partner to launch a U.S.-based complex focused on rare earth separation, refining, and magnet production — a sector of growing strategic importance.

Tech and Space Collaboration

The visit yielded significant technology partnerships as well. The United States and South Korea signed what they’re calling a “Technology Prosperity Deal” to expand bilateral cooperation on artificial intelligence, 6G networks, biotechnology, and quantum innovation, the White House outlined.

Amazon has committed to investing $5 billion through 2031 to build South Korea’s cloud infrastructure, adding to Amazon Web Services’ $40 billion investments across the Asia-Pacific region. In space exploration, NASA’s Artemis II mission will not only orbit the Moon but also deploy a Korean satellite to measure space radiation, according to the administration.

Still, despite the flurry of business deals, a comprehensive trade agreement between the two nations remains elusive. Trump indicated the countries are “very close” to a deal, though specifics haven’t emerged.

Diplomatic Honors and Defense Discussions

The visit hasn’t been all business. South Korea awarded President Trump its highest honor, the Grand Order of Mugunghwa, recognizing his past diplomatic efforts on the Korean Peninsula. He’s the first U.S. president to receive this distinction, according to reports.

Defense issues also featured prominently in the discussions. South Korean President Lee Jae Myung requested U.S. permission for South Korea to acquire fuel for nuclear-powered submarines, though he clarified they seek armed but not nuclear-armed submarines capable of extended underwater operation.

During his address to corporate leaders, Trump emphasized the vision of economic cooperation between the two nations. “We will build together, we will trade together, we will prosper together, we will thrive together,” he promised, underscoring what appears to be a deepening economic alliance at a time of growing regional challenges from China and North Korea.
