Chrysler Recall: 450,000 Jeep & Ram Trucks Affected by Trailer Brake Failure

Must read

Chrysler has announced a massive safety recall affecting over 450,000 vehicles due to a defective trailer tow module that could increase crash risks for drivers hauling trailers.

The recall, which impacts 456,287 vehicles across several popular Jeep and Ram models, addresses an improperly designed component that may cause trailer lights or brakes to fail without warning. For drivers who regularly tow equipment, boats, or other heavy loads, this malfunction could create dangerous situations on highways and roads across the country.

Which vehicles are affected? The recall encompasses several models spanning multiple years, including the 2026 Jeep Cherokee, 2024-2026 Jeep Wagoneer S, and numerous Ram truck variants from model years 2025-2026. Specifically, this includes the Ram 1500, 2500, 3500, and several cab chassis configurations of the 3500, 4500, and 5500 models, according to documents reviewed by safety regulators.

Free Repairs Planned

Chrysler, officially operating under the corporate name FCA US, LLC, has committed to replacing the faulty trailer tow modules at no cost to vehicle owners. The company indicates that owner notification letters are expected to be mailed by March 24, 2026.

But it’s not just vehicles rolling off the assembly line that are affected. The recall also includes approximately 2,871 Mopar tow-trailer modules that may have been purchased separately. “If installed in a vehicle, dealers will replace the trailer tow module, free of charge,” the company stated in its recall notice. For modules that haven’t yet been installed, Chrysler will repurchase them instead.

The timing of this recall comes as many Americans prepare for summer travel season, when trailer usage typically spikes for vacations, home improvement projects, and recreational activities.

Safety Concerns

Transportation safety experts have long warned about the dangers of towing without properly functioning trailer lights and brakes. When trailer lights fail, other drivers may not receive proper signals about stopping or turning intentions. More concerning still, if trailer brakes malfunction, stopping distances can increase dramatically, especially with heavy loads.

Owners with questions or concerns about whether their vehicle is included in the recall can contact Chrysler’s customer service directly at 1-800-853-1403 and reference recall number 03D for more information.

This isn’t the first time major automakers have faced recalls related to towing components, though the scale of this particular action — affecting nearly half a million vehicles — makes it one of the larger towing-related recalls in recent years.
