Artists with a passion for honoring veterans now have a chance to make their mark on a national stage. The Department of Veterans Affairs has officially launched its 2026 Veterans Day Poster Contest, calling on creative talents to capture the spirit of service through this year’s theme: “Veterans Helping Veterans and Their Families.”
The annual competition, which opens to both professional and amateur artists, has become a cherished tradition in commemorating November 11th. Submissions must be received by 11:59 p.m. ET on April 1, 2026 — giving artists several months to perfect their vision.
Building on a Legacy of Recognition
Last year’s contest drew impressive participation, with more than 180 entries vying for the honor. Army veteran Jeremy D. Carpenter of Lowell, Arkansas, claimed the 2025 victory with his design “Unified by Service,” which showcased a powerful message of unity. “It pays tribute to all veterans regardless of when or where they served, and it emphasizes that service to the nation is not confined to one uniform, one battlefield or one generation,” Carpenter noted of his winning design.
The selected artwork won’t just hang in a gallery. Once chosen, the winning poster will be distributed nationwide, displayed at Veterans Affairs facilities, and featured in Veterans Day ceremonies across the country.
Strict Guidelines Apply
Think you’ve got what it takes? There are some non-negotiable parameters to follow. All submissions must be original work measuring 18″ x 24″ at 300 DPI, though artists can scale to 9″x12″ for submission purposes. Each entry must incorporate the phrases “Veterans Day,” “November 11, 2026,” and “Honoring all who served” into the design.
In a sign of the times, the VA has explicitly prohibited AI-generated elements from contest entries. Military service seals are also off-limits, requiring artists to find more creative ways to represent different branches of service.
What makes a winning entry? Looking at past selections, successful posters typically balance artistic merit with a clear, resonant message that speaks to veterans’ experiences. They avoid clichĂ©s while still evoking genuine emotion and recognition.
The theme of veterans supporting fellow veterans highlights an often-overlooked aspect of military culture — the lifelong bonds and support networks that develop among those who’ve served.
