X (Twitter) Suffers Major Outage: What Caused the Global Disruption?

Must read

X, formerly known as Twitter, went dark for millions of users Tuesday morning in what appears to be one of the platform’s most widespread outages since its rebranding under Elon Musk’s ownership.

The massive disruption began around 8:02am ET on February 16, 2026, leaving users across the United States and United Kingdom staring at blank screens and empty feeds. According to Downdetector, a service that tracks website outages, more than 11,000 reports flooded in from US users while over 3,300 complaints were logged in the UK as the platform’s functionality collapsed across both its website and mobile applications.

What exactly happened? Users reported a range of symptoms — from completely blank home pages to feeds that wouldn’t load new content, essentially rendering the platform unusable during the morning hours when many turn to social media for news and updates. The timing couldn’t have been worse for a platform that positions itself as an essential real-time information source.

Scale of the Disruption

The technical troubles weren’t minor by any measure. At its peak, the outage triggered more than 41,000 reports on Downdetector, making this one of X’s most significant service disruptions in recent memory, according to tech publication TomGuide.

Many users took to alternative platforms to express frustration about being unable to post or view content during the morning news cycle. The problems appeared consistent across both the mobile app and desktop versions, suggesting a core infrastructure issue rather than a client-specific bug.

The timing of the outage coincided with morning commutes in the US and afternoon hours in the UK — prime usage periods when many rely on the platform for updates and communication. Tech publication TechRadar noted that the geographic spread of the outage predominantly affected these two English-speaking markets, though reports of issues came in from other regions as well.

Resolution and Recovery

Fortunately for X and its millions of users, the technical issues proved relatively short-lived. By 10am ET — approximately two hours after the initial reports began — the platform appeared to be functioning normally again for most users. Downdetector reports dropped below 1,000, indicating the worst of the outage had passed.

X has yet to provide an official explanation for what caused the service disruption. The company, which has dramatically reduced its workforce since Musk’s acquisition, has experienced several technical hiccups in recent years as its engineering teams have been restructured.

This outage comes at a sensitive time for the platform, which has been working to reassure advertisers and users of its stability and reliability amid increased competition from newer social media alternatives.

As service returned to normal, users quickly resumed posting — with many, ironically, using X itself to complain about the outage they had just experienced. Such is the nature of our digital dependency: even when platforms fail us, we return to them to discuss the failure.
