Texas Leads Nation in Veteran Support, Benefits, and Employment

Must read

Texas has become a powerhouse for veteran services and employment, with the state now home to the largest veteran population in the nation — over 1.5 million former service members who have chosen to put down roots in the Lone Star State.

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) exemplifies this commitment to veterans, with 2,168 veterans currently employed across the department. These employees represent every branch of the U.S. military and now serve their communities in a different capacity, as revealed in recent departmental data.

“Our veterans exemplify the very best of our department and our state. They have answered the call to serve — first in defense of our nation and now in the protection of our communities,” a DPS spokesperson said. “We are deeply grateful for their sacrifice, leadership and continued service to this state.”

Leading the Nation in Veterans Services

Why has Texas become such a magnet for those who’ve served? Beyond its military-friendly culture, the state has built an infrastructure of support that’s increasingly rare nationwide.

Texas isn’t just home to more veterans than any other state — it’s also leading the country in processing PACT Act disability claims, with over 82,720 claims filed since the act was signed into law in August 2022. The Texas Veterans Commission (TVC) has been at the forefront of this effort, as documented in their recent reporting.

“More veterans choose to live in Texas; and in Texas, we take care of our veterans,” said a TVC representative. “The Texas Veterans Commission works every day to improve the lives of our Texas veterans, their families, and survivors.”

The commission has seen its workload expand significantly since the PACT Act broadened eligibility for veterans exposed to toxic substances and burn pits. Claims assistance has increased by a whopping 25% as more veterans learn they may qualify for benefits they previously couldn’t access.

Comprehensive Support Network

Beyond processing claims, the TVC offers a range of specialized services tailored to the diverse needs of the veteran community. These include a dedicated Women Veterans Program, peer-to-peer support through TexVet, and coordination with county-level service officers through the Veterans County Service Officer Association of Texas.

The commission’s mission is straightforward but vital. “The Texas Veterans Commission works to ensure that all veterans and their families understand and receive all the benefits, support, care, and recognition that they have rightfully earned through their service in our nation’s armed forces,” according to their website.

For many veterans navigating the often complex bureaucracy of post-service benefits, these resources provide not just practical assistance but a sense that their service continues to be valued.

The state’s commitment to veterans extends beyond rhetoric into measurable action — from employment opportunities to specialized services. And with Texas’ military installations continuing to generate new veterans each year, the infrastructure supporting them will likely remain a priority for the foreseeable future.
