Warrior Dividend: $1,776 Bonus for Troops Amid Pentagon Shakeup

Must read

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has announced a $1,776 “warrior dividend” payment to military personnel, a move that will distribute approximately $2.6 billion to service members just before the holiday season.

The one-time payment, structured as a basic allowance for housing supplement, will benefit military members ranked E-1 to O-6 who were on active duty as of November 30, or Reserve members on orders of 31 days or longer. General and flag officers are excluded from the program.

“This warrior dividend serves as yet another example of how the War Department is working to improve the quality of life for our military personnel and their families,” Hegseth said. “I can think of no better Americans to receive this check right before Christmas.”

Naval Leadership Appointments

The dividend announcement comes amid a flurry of leadership changes at the Pentagon. Hegseth has revealed several high-profile Naval appointments, including the reappointment of Vice Adm. Robert M. Gaucher as submarine direct reporting portfolio manager at the Pentagon. Gaucher currently serves as commander of Naval Submarine Forces and related commands in Norfolk, Virginia.

Vice Adm. Jeffrey T. Jablon will be reappointed to serve as deputy commander of U.S. Pacific Fleet in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. He’s moving from his current role as deputy chief of Naval Operations for Installations and Logistics at the Pentagon.

Two rear admirals are getting promotions. Douglas C. Verissimo will be appointed to vice admiral as commander of Naval Air Forces in San Diego, while Rear Adm. Darin K. Via will become vice admiral as director for the Defense Health Agency in Falls Church, Virginia. Additionally, Navy Capt. Milton W. Troy III will be appointed to rear admiral (lower half).

Space Command Relocation

The War Secretary has been heavily involved in the relocation of U.S. Space Command to Redstone Arsenal, Alabama. Hegseth visited the facility on December 12, 2025, making a strong endorsement of the move from its previous location at Peterson Space Force Base in Colorado.

“It is common sense that this is precisely where Space Command should be. It is common sense that we need to move rapidly and expeditiously,” Hegseth stated during the visit.

Later, at the formal relocation ceremony, he doubled down on his commitment. “We are deadly serious in committing to cutting every piece of red tape and bureaucracy to get this headquarters established as quickly as humanly possible,” the Secretary pledged.

Border Defense Recognition

How important is the southern border to the current administration? Important enough to create a new military medal.

On August 13, 2025, Hegseth established the Mexican Border Defense Medal through a memorandum backdated to January 20. The medal recognizes service members deployed to the U.S.-Mexico border, highlighting the administration’s focus on border security as a military priority.

“This is not a secondary mission. … This is the front [line] of the defense of this country. We’re taking it seriously [and] it starts with human beings,” Hegseth told the awardees.

The Secretary also recently spoke at a Recruiting Excellence Forum at the Pentagon on December 18, though details of his remarks at that event weren’t immediately available.

The flurry of announcements and ceremonies underscores Hegseth’s active first year leading the renamed Department of War—a tenure marked by significant organizational changes, personnel moves, and policy initiatives that reflect the administration’s military priorities.
