Overturned 18-Wheeler Spills Trash, Causes Major I-20 Dallas Traffic Jam

Must read

An overturned 18-wheeler hauling trash created a massive headache for Dallas commuters Thursday, spilling its contents across eastbound I-20 and reducing traffic to a crawl for miles.

The semi flipped around noon between Bonnie View Road and J.J. Lemmon Avenue in southern Dallas, according to authorities. The crash scattered garbage across multiple lanes, forcing cleanup crews to close all but the far right lane of the eastbound highway.

Fortunately, no other vehicles were involved in the accident, and officials confirmed that no injuries were reported. Still, the impact on afternoon traffic proved substantial.

Sky 4 aerial footage revealed the extent of the mess — mounds of household waste and debris not only covering the roadway but also spilling into a culvert beneath the highway. The images showed cleanup crews working to contain what looked like a landfill suddenly transported to the middle of one of Dallas’s busiest thoroughfares.

Miles of Backup

How bad was the traffic? By early afternoon, the congestion had backed up for more than four miles, reaching all the way to I-35E. Drivers found themselves stuck in what amounted to a parking lot on one of Dallas’s major east-west corridors.

A Dallas County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson indicated that the cleanup operation would likely take “several hours” to complete. The three left lanes remained blocked through much of the afternoon as crews tackled the daunting task of removing both the overturned truck and its spilled cargo from the roadway.

Authorities haven’t yet determined what caused the truck to overturn. The incident remains under investigation, according to the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department.

For commuters already dealing with Dallas’s notoriously congested highways, Thursday’s trash spill served as yet another reminder of how quickly a routine drive can transform into hours of frustration — all it takes is one vehicle, in the wrong position, at the wrong time.
