2024 Holiday Shipping Deadlines: USPS, FedEx & UPS Cutoff Dates for Christmas Delivery

Must read

Planning to ship holiday gifts this season? You might want to mark your calendar now, because shipping deadlines are already approaching faster than Santa’s sleigh on Christmas Eve.

Major carriers have announced their critical cutoff dates for packages to arrive before Christmas, with some deadlines coming as early as December 11 for certain services. The timing crunch reflects the continued strain on shipping networks as e-commerce demands grow year after year.

USPS Deadlines: Mid-December Cutoffs for Standard Service

The U.S. Postal Service has set December 17 as the last day to ship via its Ground Advantage service if you want items to arrive before December 25 within the contiguous United States, according to a recent announcement from the agency. Procrastinators still have options, though — USPS Priority Mail Express shipments can go out as late as December 20 and still make it in time for Christmas morning, the service confirms.

FedEx Options: From Early Birds to Last-Minute Shippers

Planning to ship something heavy? FedEx Freight Economy has the earliest deadline of all major services, requiring packages to be shipped by Thursday, December 11 to guarantee holiday delivery, as indicated in their holiday schedule.

For standard shipments, FedEx Express Saver packages need to be on their way by Friday, December 19. Want an extra day? The company notes you can extend this deadline to Saturday, December 20 with an optional Saturday pickup — though it’ll cost you a $16 per package surcharge.

True last-minute shoppers have a lifeline. FedEx Ground with 1-day transit time can ship as late as Tuesday, December 23 for Christmas Eve delivery, while the premium FedEx SameDay service will operate right up through December 24 itself for same-day delivery, according to the company’s schedule.

UPS Deadlines: Strategic Planning Required

What about UPS? Their 3 Day Select service requires shipping by December 19 for delivery before Christmas, while UPS 2nd Day Air packages must be shipped by December 22, the carrier states.

Expecting deliveries during the peak season? Be prepared for some adjustment to normal timeframes. FedEx has disclosed that from November 29 through January 4, delivery commitment times will be extended by 90 minutes on select time-definite FedEx Expedited services, potentially affecting arrival windows.

And what about Christmas Day itself? Nearly all shipping operations halt completely, with FedEx Custom Critical services being the only exception, as reported in their holiday operations notice.

The tight deadlines reflect both the calendar configuration this year and the continued strain on shipping networks. Industry experts recommend adding a buffer day or two beyond these deadlines when possible, especially for shipments to rural areas or during periods of inclement weather.

In the end, the best gift might be the one that arrives on time — which means shipping earlier rather than later. After all, there’s nothing quite like explaining to a disappointed child that Santa got caught in the supply chain.
