Massive Gold Star Recall: Rodent & Bird Feces Contaminate Food, Drugs

Must read

Thousands of products from Minneapolis distributor Gold Star are being recalled after federal inspectors discovered something that might make your stomach turn: widespread contamination from rodent and bird droppings throughout the facility’s storage areas.

The sweeping recall, announced by the FDA, encompasses virtually every type of product stored at Gold Star Distribution’s warehouse — drugs, medical devices, cosmetics, dietary supplements, human food, and even pet food. All are potentially contaminated with Salmonella and other hazards stemming from what inspectors described as “insanitary conditions” throughout the facility.

Filth and Contamination Widespread

How bad was it? Investigators found evidence of rodents, rodent urine, bird droppings, and general filth throughout storage areas containing sensitive products intended for human and animal consumption. The contamination wasn’t limited to a single section but appeared widespread across the facility where medical devices, pharmaceuticals, food items, and cosmetics were kept.

The recall affects products distributed across three states, with public health officials warning that exposure to the contaminated items could pose serious health risks. Salmonella infection can cause severe gastrointestinal symptoms including fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. For vulnerable populations like young children, elderly individuals, and those with compromised immune systems, such infections can be life-threatening.

“This isn’t just about a few mice or some droppings in a corner,” a health department spokesperson told reporters. “We’re talking about systematic contamination throughout a facility handling items that go directly into people’s bodies or onto their skin.”

Specific Locations Impacted

The recall specifically mentions certain locations receiving the potentially contaminated products, including Jimmy’s Food at 1121 12th Ave NO in Minneapolis and Kalis Adult Daycare Center at 2301 2nd Ave N, according to documentation from food safety officials. Both facilities have been notified and are working to remove affected products.

Thousands of snacks and dietary supplements are included in the recall. Investigators discovered that many popular items may have been exposed to animal feces, creating what health experts describe as a “dangerous health risk” for consumers.

The FDA is advising consumers who have purchased any products that may have been distributed by Gold Star to check with retailers about their source and to discard any potentially affected items out of an abundance of caution.

Still, tracking every product that passed through the facility presents a significant challenge. Many items may have already been consumed, while others sit on store shelves with no obvious connection to the Minneapolis distributor.

Regulatory officials have temporarily shut down operations at the facility pending a thorough cleaning and inspection. Gold Star representatives have not responded to requests for comment about how such extensive contamination was allowed to develop or what measures they plan to implement to prevent future occurrences.

For consumers, the takeaway is clear: check your pantry, medicine cabinet, and pet supplies. That snack bar or supplement bottle might look perfectly fine on the outside, but what happened before it reached your home is what has health officials concerned enough to issue one of the most comprehensive recalls in recent memory.
