A 21-year-old Azle man has been arrested in connection with the suspicious death of a woman found deceased in a local home last week, authorities confirmed Monday.
Kruz Dean Wanser was taken into custody on January 15 following a multi-agency operation involving the Azle Police Department, Texas Rangers, U.S. Marshals, and other law enforcement units, according to officials. The arrest comes after 37-year-old Margaret Pennington was discovered dead in an Azle residence on January 11.
Multiple Felony Charges Filed
Wanser now faces serious felony charges including tampering with a human corpse and possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, authorities confirmed. The case has shocked the normally quiet Azle community, a small city located northwest of Fort Worth.
What exactly happened inside that home? Investigators have released limited details about the circumstances surrounding Pennington’s death, which they describe as “suspicious.” The relationship between Wanser and Pennington, if any, has not yet been publicly disclosed.
The arrest wasn’t the work of a single agency. It took a coordinated effort between local and federal authorities, including the Parker County Special Crimes Unit and Texas Department of Public Safety, to bring Wanser into custody. Law enforcement sources indicate the investigation moved quickly after the discovery of Pennington’s body.
Neighbors in the area expressed surprise at the police activity. “This is usually such a quiet street,” said one resident who asked not to be named. “We never expected something like this to happen here.”
Investigation Continues
The tampering with a human corpse charge suggests authorities believe Wanser may have attempted to conceal evidence related to Pennington’s death. Such charges are often filed when investigators suspect interference with a crime scene.
Additionally, the drug charges indicate officers discovered what they believe to be a significant quantity of controlled substances during their investigation. The “intent to deliver” specification typically suggests authorities found evidence of drug distribution rather than mere personal use.
Court records show Wanser is being held at the Parker County Jail. It wasn’t immediately clear if he has retained an attorney or when his first court appearance will take place.
Authorities are urging anyone with information about the case to come forward as the investigation continues into the circumstances surrounding Pennington’s death and Wanser’s alleged involvement.
