Texas Winter Storm 2026: Ice, Snow, Extreme Cold & Power Outage Risks

Must read

Texas is bracing for a potentially devastating winter storm that could bring days of ice, snow, and dangerously cold temperatures across much of the state, with officials warning residents to prepare for extended power outages and hazardous travel conditions.

A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for North and Central Texas through Sunday evening, which will then give way to an Extreme Cold Warning lasting from Sunday evening through Tuesday morning. Forecasters predict the region may not climb above freezing until Tuesday afternoon, creating a prolonged period of dangerous conditions across the state.

Ice, Snow, and Arctic Cold

The storm system is expected to deliver a one-two punch. First comes the precipitation — with FOX 4 meteorologists predicting a full changeover from freezing rain to sleet and snow late Saturday. The ice accumulation could be substantial, with forecasts calling for 1/4″ to 1/2″ north and west of Dallas-Fort Worth, and potentially heavier amounts of 1/2″ to 3/4″ in areas east and southeast of the metroplex.

Then comes the cold. And it’s going to be brutal.

“Monday seems to be the coldest of the days. This is going to be very problematic for Texas. We need to get prepared now,” warned meteorologists in a video forecast discussing the arctic outbreak.

Temperatures are expected to plummet to around 9 degrees by Monday, with wind chills potentially reaching -5 degrees. This extreme cold will complicate recovery efforts and put additional strain on Texas’ power infrastructure.

State Emergency Response

Texas isn’t taking any chances this time. Governor Greg Abbott has already activated state emergency response resources, including the Texas National Guard and Department of Public Safety, to assist with infrastructure impacts and help stranded motorists.

“As temperatures could drop below freezing and regions of Texas face snow, ice and freezing rain, it is crucial that Texans remain weather-aware, check DriveTexas.org before traveling, and heed the guidance of state and local officials,” Abbott said in a statement.

The memory of 2021’s catastrophic winter storm and power grid failure looms large. Could it happen again?

ERCOT, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, says it anticipates some power outages during this 2026 winter storm but expects overall grid stability unlike the widespread failure seen in 2021. Still, officials are urging Texans to prepare for possible localized outages, particularly in areas where ice accumulation could bring down trees and power lines.

Widespread Impact

This isn’t just a North Texas problem. The major winter storm is impacting millions across the South with ice and snow from Texas to the Carolinas. Winter Weather Alerts have been issued across a wide swath including Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas.

Road conditions are already deteriorating in many areas, with sleet and snow making travel hazardous. Authorities are strongly discouraging unnecessary travel through at least Tuesday morning.

For Texans who lived through the 2021 winter disaster, there’s an unsettling familiarity to the forecasts. The difference this time may be in the preparation — both by individuals and by the systems designed to keep people safe and warm. The coming days will test whether those lessons were truly learned.
