Dallas Winter Storm 2024: Icy Roads Strand Drivers in North Texas

Must read

Dallas County Courtesy Patrol officers found themselves on the frontlines of a different kind of emergency this weekend as Winter Storm Fern turned North Texas roadways into treacherous ice rinks, stranding drivers and creating hazardous conditions across the region.

For drivers like Rocky Walker, what started as a routine commute quickly became a frightening ordeal when his vehicle suffered a flat tire on an ice-covered interstate. “I kind of panicked, because of the cars, and everything that was coming,” Walker explained. “We can change a tire, but we can’t change the tire on ice.”

Julie Petita, a nurse who began her journey before dawn, found herself in a similar predicament. “I’m a nurse, and I am an essential worker, so we got up before 4:30 this morning so that we could make it in on time,” she said, highlighting the extra burden faced by healthcare professionals who simply can’t call in despite dangerous road conditions.

Dangerous Conditions Overwhelm Emergency Services

The winter storm has pushed local emergency services to their limits. Dallas Fire-Rescue Chief Justin Ball confirmed his department has responded to twice as many crashes, fires and welfare checks as normal since the storm’s arrival.

Just how bad is it? On Saturday alone, Dallas County reported 16 major crashes, 19 minor crashes, 21 motorist assists, 27 traffic hazards, and 40 Courtesy Patrol calls. Meanwhile, Dallas Fire has handled 54 motor vehicle accidents, 4 structure fires, and 23 fall victims amid the freezing conditions.

Courtesy Patrol Officer Richard Rodriguez has been working tirelessly to assist stranded motorists throughout the storm. “A lot of people are stranded, and it just feels good to come out there and help them out. Make sure they get the help they need in order to get home safely,” Rodriguez noted.

The officer warned that despite some intermittent sunshine, road conditions remain treacherous. “It’s very dangerous to be on the road right now due to the cold weather, with the icy roads, black ice, a lot of wet roads, slush ice. People still drive and think that they treat it as a regular dry road,” he cautioned.

Widespread Disruptions

The storm’s impact extends beyond emergency services and individual drivers. Food delivery service DoorDash has completely suspended operations throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

“Due to hazardous conditions and icy roads brought by this unprecedented winter storm, we’ve activated our Severe Weather Protocol and temporarily suspended operations in Dallas, Fort Worth, and the surrounding areas,” DoorDash spokesperson Jenn Rosenberg stated.

For those who must venture out, emergency officials continue to urge extreme caution. Patches of black ice remain particularly dangerous, as they can be nearly invisible to drivers until it’s too late to react.

As the winter storm lingers over North Texas, the work of first responders and courtesy patrol officers offers a reminder that even in the coldest conditions, there are those willing to brave the elements to help their neighbors — one stranded motorist at a time.
