Elderly Man Dies in Colleyville Pond Amid North Texas Freeze

Must read

A 78-year-old man died Sunday after being found unresponsive in a pond amid freezing temperatures in Colleyville, authorities said.

First responders discovered Barry Alldredge in the water while they were initially responding to help his wife, who had fallen in a nearby pasture. The tragic discovery came during one of North Texas’ coldest mornings this winter.

Colleyville police and fire departments responded to a residence in the 5000 block of Fry Lane around 10:30 a.m. Sunday. At that time, temperatures had plunged to approximately 15°F with a brutal “feels-like” temperature of just 3°F.

What exactly led Alldredge to end up in the pond remains unclear. Officials haven’t released details about how long he might have been in the water before being found or what may have caused the incident.

The bitter cold likely complicated rescue efforts. First responders face significant challenges in water rescues during extreme temperatures, when hypothermia can set in rapidly and affect both victims and rescuers.

Authorities haven’t indicated whether the freezing conditions directly contributed to Alldredge’s death, though the extreme weather certainly presented dangerous conditions for anyone outdoors.

The incident appears unrelated to any other Alldredge family members mentioned in public records from the area. A search of local documents showed no previous incidents involving Barry Alldredge.

This marks at least the second weather-related emergency in Colleyville this winter, as the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex continues to experience periodic cold snaps bringing dangerous conditions to the region.

Colleyville Police Department is handling the investigation, though they’ve not yet released additional details about the circumstances surrounding the incident.
