Join the 2026 Texas Winter Beach Cleanup: Help Keep Coastlines Clean

Must read

Texas beaches are about to get their first major cleanup of 2026, and officials are calling for all hands on deck.

Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham has issued a call for volunteers to participate in the upcoming Winter Beach Cleanups, scheduled for February 6 at South Padre Island and February 7 across the Coastal Bend region. The events mark the first coordinated effort of the year to combat coastal pollution along Texas’ beloved shorelines.

“Last year, nearly 12,000 volunteers picked up close to 118,000 pounds of trash as a part of the GLO’s Adopt-A-Beach Cleanups,” said Commissioner Buckingham in a statement released January 29. “The Adopt-A-Beach Winter Cleanups are the first opportunity of 2026 for Texans and volunteers from around the nation to make this year another resounding success in our mission to keep Texas beaches clean.”

The winter events may be smaller than their warmer-weather counterparts, but they pack a punch. During last year’s Winter Cleanups, 415 dedicated volunteers managed to clear over 5,300 pounds of debris from approximately 12 miles of coastline, according to officials.

Why it matters

Trash on Texas beaches isn’t just an eyesore — it represents a significant environmental threat to marine ecosystems and coastal communities that depend on healthy shorelines for both ecological and economic reasons.

The Texas Adopt-A-Beach program operates as an all-volunteer initiative specifically designed to keep Texas beaches clean while simultaneously educating the public about the harmful effects of marine debris, as explained on the program’s website.

Ready to help? The Coastal Bend Winter Cleanup on February 7 will kick off with check-in at 8:30 AM, with the actual cleanup running from 9:00 AM until noon at multiple locations throughout the region, according to the event’s registration page.

Commissioner Buckingham emphasized the importance of these volunteer efforts, noting, “I encourage volunteers to come out to South Padre Island and the Coastal Bend on February 6th and 7th to help ensure these coastal communities remain beautiful for generations to come.”

Corporate support

Who’s backing these cleanup efforts? The 2026 Adopt-A-Beach events have attracted support from a diverse range of sponsors including energy companies like Chevron, SLB, Valero, and ExxonMobil, alongside environmental organizations such as the Ocean Conservancy and the Coastal Bend Bays and Estuaries Program. Additional sponsors include the Texas Coastal Management Program, NOAA, Optimus Steel, SESCO Cement, VLS Environmental Solutions, and the Texas General Land Office Buffalo Brigade, as listed in the GLO’s announcement.

The combination of corporate, governmental, and nonprofit support underscores the broad recognition of the program’s importance across different sectors.

For those who can’t make the winter events, don’t worry — the Adopt-A-Beach program typically hosts additional cleanups throughout the year. But there’s something special about being part of the year’s first major effort to keep Texas’ coastlines pristine.

As winter winds blow trash onto shores and before the busy tourist season begins, these February cleanups may be the most important of the year for maintaining the ecological health and beauty that make Texas beaches worth visiting in the first place.
