Texas Military Heroes Week 2026: Events Honoring Veterans Statewide

Must read

Texas is gearing up to honor its military heroes in a big way next year, with state officials announcing plans for Texas Military Heroes Week to be held February 2-6, 2026.

Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham is leading the charge, encouraging Texans across the state to participate in the weeklong tribute to those who have served. “As Chairwoman of the Texas Veterans Land Board (VLB), I am reminded every day of the cost of service to our nation and the sacrifices made by those who have and continue to fight for our freedoms,” said Commissioner Buckingham. “From the earliest battles, like the Alamo right here in Texas, to conflicts overseas, please join me in honoring all who have helped secure our freedom throughout the years and those who are defending it still. We truly are the land of the free because of the brave.”

The announcement comes as Texas continues to cement its reputation as one of the most veteran-friendly states in the nation. Home to 15 military installations including Fort Hood, Joint Base San Antonio, and Naval Air Station Corpus Christi, the Lone Star State offers more veteran benefits than any other state.

Year-Round Support for Veterans

Behind the scenes, the Texas Veterans Land Board operates an impressive network of support for those who’ve served. The VLB currently manages 10 state-of-the-art long-term care facilities and four Texas State Veterans Cemeteries across the state, with plans for a fifth cemetery underway in Lubbock, scheduled to open later in 2026.

Tony Dale, Executive Secretary of the VLB, emphasized the significance of the upcoming observance. “During Texas Military Heroes Week, we come together to honor the incredible bravery and sacrifice of our Veterans. Their unwavering commitment to our nation and their selfless acts of courage inspire us all,” he said. “Let us take this time to recognize and celebrate the heroes among us, and to express our deepest gratitude for their service. Texas stands proud and united in our commitment to support our Veterans, today and always.”

Events Across Texas

What does a state-wide celebration of military service look like? For Texans, it means a calendar packed with events spanning from January through April 2026.

The festivities kick off with the Confederate Heroes Day Dinner on January 17, hosted by the Alamo City Guards Camp #1325 at the Bulverde Community Center, according to their website.

History buffs won’t want to miss the Museum of the American G.I.’s Living History Weekend scheduled for March 21-22, 2026. The event promises to bring military history to life with WWII, WWI, and Vietnam skirmishes, historic vehicles, and a military swap meet for collectors and enthusiasts.

Sports-minded supporters can participate in the Military Heroes 5K/10K Run in Trophy Club, TX, offering categories for both serious runners and casual participants looking to show their support. A similar event, the annual Military Heroes Run, takes place in Westlake and is organized by Honoring Our Wounded Military, a 501c3 dedicated to supporting wounded service members.

Perhaps the most elegant affair will be the Valero Texas Open’s Night to Honor Our Heroes on April 3, 2026, held at the JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa. The evening gala will run from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm and feature military artifacts and testimonials from service members.

Visual Tributes

Not all commemorations involve active participation. In Huntsville, plans are already in motion for Hero Field, a striking visual tribute featuring hundreds of American flags to be displayed along I-45 near H.E.A.R.T.S. Veterans Museum during Veterans Day week 2026.

“I remember standing at a similar display in my hometown, watching those flags move in the breeze, and feeling an overwhelming sense of pride and gratitude,” said one organizer. “I thought, ‘Huntsville is the kind of community that deserves something like this — a place where we can all come together to honor our heroes.'”

For those wanting a more interactive military experience, the Texas Military Department has previously hosted open houses at Camp Mabry in Austin featuring helicopter shows, parachute jumps, and war tributes. Texas Adjutant General Maj. Gen. John F. Nichols has stated, “It’s an honor to serve Texas citizens both home and abroad,” reflecting the pride the military community takes in their service.

With more than a year to prepare, additional events are expected to be announced as Texas Military Heroes Week approaches. But the message from state officials is clear: in a state known for doing things big, honoring those who’ve served might be the biggest gesture of all.
