White House Correspondents’ Dinner Shooting: Manifesto, Motive, and Aftermath

Must read

A man with no criminal history, a self-declared mission, and more than a thousand words of grievance walked up to one of Washington’s most high-profile events on Saturday night armed with multiple guns and knives — and opened fire.

Cole Tomas Allen, 31, is scheduled to be arraigned Monday on federal charges that include using a firearm during a crime of violence and assault on a federal officer, after authorities say he attempted to breach a security checkpoint at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner at the Washington Hilton. A Secret Service officer was struck in his ballistic vest during the confrontation. He’s expected to recover.

A Manifesto, a Moniker, and a Plan

Minutes before the attack, Allen sent a lengthy message to family members — more than 1,000 words, by the Associated Press’s account — that read as part confession, part farewell, and part political screed. He referred to himself as a “Friendly Federal Assassin” and railed against Trump administration policies. The writings also reportedly mocked security at the venue itself. It’s the kind of detail that will haunt investigators for a while.

Authorities also uncovered what one law enforcement official described as numerous anti-Trump social media posts linked to Allen. Still, investigators say they believe he acted alone — no broader conspiracy, no known accomplices. Just one man, a stack of weapons, and a long list of grievances.

No Record. No Warning Signs on Paper.

Here’s what makes this case particularly unsettling: a search of state and federal court databases showed no indication Allen had ever previously been charged with a crime, according to the Associated Press. Clean record. Legal purchases. A path that, on paper, looked entirely unremarkable.

Allen’s sister, who lives in Maryland, told investigators her brother had legally purchased several weapons from a California gun store and stored them at their parents’ home in Torrance — without their knowledge. She described him as someone prone to making radical statements. That detail — a family member aware of the rhetoric but perhaps not the arsenal — will likely become a significant thread in the investigation going forward.

The shotgun used in Saturday’s attack was purchased in August 2025, according to two law enforcement sources. Allen also owned a semiautomatic pistol he’d bought back in 2023. Both weapons were legally obtained. Both were brought to one of the most symbolically loaded events on Washington’s social calendar.

Family Alerted Police — Two Hours Later

After receiving Allen’s writings, his brother — located in Connecticut — contacted New London police at 10:49 p.m., roughly two hours after the shooting had already taken place. Investigators say the brother reached out wanting to share information related to the incident. It’s unclear at this stage precisely when Allen sent the messages, or whether anyone in the family recognized the gravity of what they were reading before the attack unfolded.

That two-hour gap is the kind of detail prosecutors and defense attorneys will both be picking apart for months.

What Comes Next

Allen faces serious federal exposure. The charges — using a firearm during a crime of violence and assault on a federal officer — carry significant mandatory minimums, and prosecutors are likely just getting started. Monday’s arraignment will be the first formal courtroom moment in what figures to be a lengthy legal process.

The Secret Service officer struck in the ballistic vest was, by every account, fortunate. A few inches in any direction and this story has a very different ending. Washington has seen politically motivated violence before — it always has — but an armed man walking up to the Correspondents’ Dinner with a manifesto in his pocket and a shotgun in hand is a specific kind of alarm bell. One that doesn’t go quiet easily.

As for Allen’s self-styled moniker — “Friendly Federal Assassin” — there’s nothing friendly about what federal prosecutors are preparing.
