A soldier who served his country is about to be laid to rest — and right now, no one is expected to show up.
U.S. Army Veteran William Adrian Shepherd, a Specialist 4 who served from September 1972 to September 1974, will be buried on Friday, April 10, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the Coastal Bend State Veterans Cemetery in what officials are calling an unaccompanied veteran burial. No next-of-kin is expected to attend. The Texas General Land Office is asking the public to come anyway — because no one should go into the ground alone.
A Life, A Service, A Ceremony With No Mourners — Yet
Shepherd was born on December 11, 1952, and earned the National Defense Service Medal for his Vietnam-era service. He gave two years to the Army during one of the most turbulent chapters in American military history. What happened in the decades after isn’t part of the public record here. But what’s happening on April 10th is — and the community has a chance to be part of it.
He will receive full military honors at the burial. If no family member steps forward, a Veterans Land Board Representative will accept the folded flag on his behalf. It’s a protocol that’s both dignified and, if you think about it too long, quietly heartbreaking.
The Push to Show Up
The Texas Veterans Land Board has been clear about its philosophy on moments like this one. “The Texas Veterans Land Board works with the local communities and fellow Veterans service organizations to ensure NO Veteran is EVER left behind,” the agency stated in its announcement. That’s not just a slogan — it’s a standing call to action, renewed each time a veteran faces burial without family.
Still, it takes more than a press release to fill a cemetery. It takes people actually showing up on a Friday morning, maybe rearranging a work schedule, maybe driving across town. The VLB is counting on that. So, in a way, is Shepherd.
Who’s Behind the Call?
The effort falls under the broader mission of Dr. Dawn Buckingham, who in 2022 became something of a landmark figure in Texas government. As noted in the announcement, she “made history in 2022, winning a statewide election to become Texas’ first female Land Commissioner.” Serving veterans is among her stated priorities — and unaccompanied burials are one of the starkest tests of whether that commitment is institutional or just rhetorical.
This isn’t the first time the Coastal Bend community has been asked to step in. Local outlets have previously covered similar services in the region — ceremonies where strangers became, if only for a graveside hour, the family a veteran didn’t have.
How to Attend or Get More Information
The burial is open to the public. Members of the media planning to attend are asked to RSVP to [email protected]. The GLO Press Office can also be reached by phone at (512) 936-9582. Showing up, for anyone, requires nothing more than the willingness to be there.
SP4 William Adrian Shepherd served so others wouldn’t have to. On April 10th, the least anyone can do is return the favor — and make sure the last thing he hears isn’t silence.
